Michael Tewes wurde 1973 in Remscheid-Lennep im Bergischen Land geboren. Er begann sein Studium der Fotografie an der FH-Dortmund bei Arno Fischer und wechselte nach ein paar Semestern an die FH-Potsdam. Seine Abschlussarbeit über den Hawthorne-Effekt realisierte er über ein DAAD Stipendium am Art Institute in Chicago. Schon früh erhielt Michael Tewes eine Reihe an Auszeichnungen für seine Fotografien u.a. den Körber Fotoaward und als seine künstlerischen Arbeiten wurden bei u.a. bei der Berlin Biennale 05, der Produzentengalerie Hamburg und im Kunstverein Heidelberg ausgestellt.
Nach ersten Projekten die er sich während Reisen ans andere Ende der Welt suchte, wandte er sich mehr und mehr Langzeitbeobachtungen zu. Darin thematisiert er das Verhältnis von sozialen Systemen und Kulturlandschaften. Die von ihm beobachten Plätze sind für ihn mehr als Allgemeinorte: Es sind Bühnen für sehr persönliche und zugleich geschichtliche Momente.

Michael Tewes was born in Remscheid-Lennep in the Bergisches Land in 1973. He began his studies of photography at the FH-Dortmund with Arno Fischer and changed after a few semesters to the FH-Potsdam. He realized his final thesis on the Hawthorne effect through a DAAD scholarship at the Art Institute in Chicago. Early on, Michael Tewes received a number of awards for his photographs, including the Körber Fotoaward, and his artistic works were exhibited at the Berlin Biennale 05, the Produzentengalerie Hamburg and the Kunstverein Heidelberg.
After his first projects, which he sought out during trips to the other side of the world, he turned more and more to long-term observations. In them, he addresses the relationship between social systems and cultural landscapes. The places he observes are for him more than general places: they are stages for very personal and at the same time historical moments.

Il a réalisé son travail de fin d‘études sur l‘effet Hawthorne grâce à une bourse du DAAD à l‘Art Institute de Chicago. Très tôt, Michael Tewes a reçu une série de prix pour ses photographies, notamment le Körber Fotoaward, et ses travaux artistiques ont été exposés à la Biennale de Berlin 05, à la Produzentengalerie de Hambourg et au Kunstverein de Heidel- berg.
Après les premiers projets qu‘il a recherchés lors de voyages à l‘autre bout du monde, il s‘est de plus en plus tourné vers des observations à long terme. Il y thématise la relation entre les systèmes sociaux et les paysages culturels. Les lieux qu‘il observe sont pour lui plus que des lieux communs : ce sont des scènes pour des moments à la fois très personnels et historiques.
